Literacy

At Margaret River Primary School, we use high quality literacy teaching that focuses on a balance of Explicit Teaching Strategies, Student Centred Learning for 21st Century Education and Play Based Learning in Early Childhood. The importance is on the balance of inquiry based explicit literacy instruction with a focus on success for all students.

Early Intervention

Margaret River Primary School has a number of Early Intervention Programmes that improve student learning. During Kindergarten all students will complete a Screen of Communication Skills (SOCS). This informs further intervention including referrals to Speech Pathologists. Students identified for intervention will participate in Words, Grammar, Fun Phase 1 which is a small group literacy readiness programme.

In Pre-Primary students participate in On Entry testing in Term 1 and there is small group support with Words, Grammar, Fun Phase 2.

Students in Year 1 and Year 2 participate in small group support with Mini Lit from Macquarie University programme that is used with those students who need further assistance with reading and comprehension.

Students in Year 3 and Year 4 participate in small group support with MacqLit from Macquaire University programme that is used with those students who need further assistance with reading and comprehension.

Margaret River Primary has two dedicated Education Assistants in the Intervention and Support role. It is their role, in consultation with classroom teachers to identify and support the students from Kindergarten – Year 4 who will need extra support with Literacy. These Education Assistants work with small groups throughout the school day.
