Instrumental Music

Margaret River Primary School has a renowned music program and many students are also part of the Instrumental Music School Services program. In 2019 around 85 students from Years 5 and 6 at Margaret River Primary School have been learning through IMSS, with an average intake of 49 in Year 5 across Woodwind, Brass, Guitar and Percussion.Instrumental Music Teachers are qualified in teaching classes, however they are specialists on specific instruments.  These teachers generally travel to a number of schools each week, teaching small groups of selected students to play various instruments.

As Margaret River has a senior guitar ensemble and concert band, based at Margaret River Senior High School, students are offered flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion or guitar lessons at Margaret River Primary School.  These teachers are provided by the Education Department through IMSS (formerly known as SIM or School of Instrumental Music).Selected students come out of normal classes for a group lesson each week.

If they are invited to do so, they can attend the Margaret River Senior High School Concert Band and they also participate in numerous activities and performances throughout the school year.Students have the opportunity to follow their musical pathway into various styles of music, different types of ensembles and some end up as instrumental teachers themselves, or as professional musicians. For more information regarding IMSS, please visit www.det.wa.edu.au/imss
