In an exciting finale to the primary school’s swimming season, Earth faction in a great team effort with a score of 358 points, nipped in ahead of fast finishing Ocean to win the faction shield by only three points at the 2013 MRPS Middle Cell Swimming Carnival held at the Aquatic Centre last Thursday.
With three quarters of the events completed, Earth was comfortably ahead by over 50 points. But last year’s champions Ocean were not going to let any opportunity pass and stormed home to win most of the relay events in a devastating example of team swimming. By the end of the program they were found to be just three points shy of Earth’s total, having accumulated 355 points.
Very dominant again in the Year 5 divisions were James C and Mazie W, both from Ocean, who after winning their individual championships last year, returned this year to again accept the boys’ and girls’ champion awards.
Third placed faction Forest and fourth placed Sun kept on competing enthusiastically throughout the events to finish with 259 points and 208 points respectively.
Prominent among the Year 4 swimmers was boys’ champion Marcus T (Ocean), while Tara A (Forest) and Ruby P (Earth) had a close tussle in the girls’ championship with the former prevailing by a few points.
MRPS Deputy Principal Campbell Madden said he was impressed by the skilful swimming displayed by all factions and the exciting atmosphere in the faction bays. He thanked all teachers involved in preparing the students and the parents for their encouragement of their children and their assistance with running the carnival.
