Lessons have begun in the garden with our new year 4 classes and our continuing Year 5 classes. Last Tuesday saw a bumper crop of fresh produce made available from the canteen….the garden gave up masses of corn, silverbeet, tomatoes, capsicum, beans, spring onions, leeks, kale and eggplant. This term, produce from the garden will once again be sold from the canteen from 3.10pm to 3.30pm whenever there is a surplus. This is usually on a Tuesday of newsletter week but supply is not always guaranteed.

This year will see full implementation of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program with our Year 4 and 5 classes in Term 2. This means that participating classes will have both a garden and kitchen lesson each fortnight. Susie Ormonde is continuing as our garden specialist and we welcome Mel Somerset as our newly appointed kitchen specialist. During Term 1 they will be organising and overseeing the kitchen fit-out and ordering the many materials and equipment required to conduct the program. Beginning in Term 2, our Year 3 classes will become involved in a modified garden program.
We welcome parents, friends and community members who would like to be regular helpers in the garden this term and also volunteers for the kitchen lessons when they start in Term 2. Our garden lessons are between 9.00am and 11.00am each Tuesday and from 10.00am to 11.00am each Thursday. Contact Susie Ormonde either by phone:Â 0488 734 319 or email:Â ormkyme@iinet.net.au if you would like to help out. Volunteers play an important and valued part in the delivery of our program.
This term we will be extending the garden into the old bike rack area adjacent to the existing garden. The plan has been completed and we are almost ready to commence work. Once again we will need volunteers to do the heavy work…..digging reticulation lines, laying out reticulation, digging garden footings, mixing and pouring cement footings, laying bricks, brick rendering, moving soil…..etc
A note regarding a busy bee date, time and further details will be out soon. Hope you can help us out.
We began our project as a garden in April 2009 after a year and a term of planning and construction. We have received wonderful support and acknowledgement for the way the garden looks and operates. With work now underway on the kitchen, our project just got a lot bigger! We look forward to the increased involvement of parents and community to ensure the success of this very worthwhile educational programme that also promotes sustainability principles and the positive social engagement of our students through a common interest…fresh food…planting, growing, nurturing, harvesting, preparing and sharing……..that’s got to be a good thing!
We’re looking forward to a great year in the kitchen/garden.

I love the smilebox collection idea. This is a great little keepsake momento for the children pictured to print off and keep, particularly as time spent in the garden is such a fun part of their school experience.
