The Chickens
Do you have chickens as pets? If you do, you know that they poop a lot. On Thursday my group had the Chickens job. We rushed to the shed to get the shovel and wheelbarrow and headed off. There it was – a manure-infested coop.
“Dibs not doing the manure”, everyone in my group said competitively.
I sighed, “Then I guess it’s me.” Honestly, it was okay, but I didn’t do it for long because J wanted to do the job so that I could have a rest. Kian pushed the wheelbarrow to the compost piles. Surprisingly, we finished before the lesson ended. My group left me with the chickens, so I got to pick them up all by myself. Their wings flapped against my face gently. Finally the lesson ended.
“Aah, the fun’s over”, I sighed.

Strange Creatures in the compost
What would you do if you saw the creature I saw today? It was so spooky. It looked a bit like a ghost cricket with an extra head.
“Terri! Terri!” called Rana. Terri came to see what all the fuss was about.
“Oh, it’s fine you know. Why don’t you go give it to the chickens. They love them,” said Terri.
So Maggie scooped it out of the compost and headed for the chickens. After that excitement, we continued putting compost pile one into compost pile two.

Harvesting and our Honesty Stall
What a wonderful harvest! This term we harvested tumeric, bananas and the biggest sweet potato we have ever seen!
Terri said,
“Now is a perfect time to harvest root crops. It’s also been a great winter for broccoli, kale and cauliflower. Our school program has been so productive!”
Have you been to our Honesty Stall recently, because if you have you might have seen all the herbs, coriander and parsley. Did you know that the Honesty Stall is always open and we have grown way more than we need. Come and enjoy the produce we have grown.
Another job we did was moving the finger limes, so you never know, maybe next time you go to the Honesty Stall you might find something really special there.

Gardening Tips 
Tip 1: In the middle of Spring, it is the perfect time to start planting flowers, vegetables and herbs.
Tip 2: Apply only decomposed, rotted manure that has cured for at least six months.
Tip 3: Fresh manure is too high (hot) and can burn plants; it may also contain pathogens or parasites.
